Thrive2027 News: Data Dashboard, Mental Health in the Workplace and More

Welcome to the Thrive2027 Blog!

Every other month, we will bring you the latest Thrive2027 news, including deep dives into regional data, stories from Thrive2027 partners, and recommendations on specific actions you can take to help our community thrive.

Need a refresher on Thrive2027? Thrive2027 is our community’s commitment, led by United Way of Southern Maine, to three 10-year goals, grounded in data and reflecting the hopes of thousands.

By 2027,

  • 70% of children read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade (Goal 1).
  • 70% of households pay less than 30% of their income on housing (Goal 2).
  • Preventable premature deaths will be reduced by 10% (Goal 3).

Note: This blog discusses suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling with depression or thoughts of self-harm or suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK for free, 24/7, confidential support and resources.

Data Dive:

Death by Suicide in Cumberland County

Goal 3 – Help us all live longer, better and reduce preventable deaths by 10%

Every year in Cumberland County, an average of 37 people die by suicide. Across the state, a Maine resident dies by suicide every 36 hours, and this trend has only increased in recent years. However, suicide is often a preventable tragedy. Understanding warning signs, how to respond, and how data plays a role can help overcome stigma and prevent future suicide attempts or deaths. THRIVING WORKPLACES: IDEXX AND MAKE IT OK

Goal 3 – Help us all live longer, better and reduce preventable deaths by 10%

Stigma and misconceptions around mental illness often prevent individuals from acknowledging signs and seeking help. IDEXX recognized workplaces could make a difference by accommodating and supporting those navigating mental illness.

They aligned with the nationally recognized Make It OK campaign and made resources relating to mental illness widely available throughout their offices and intranet channels. Their Human Resources department also worked with a licensed counselor to train managers on mental health. These are just a few ways IDEXX has worked to create a mental health-friendly workplace. You can find these and other best practices in the Thrive2027 Thriving Workplace Policies.
